The United States has claimed that its military has completely halted maritime trade in and out of Iran as tensions continue alongside ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

According to US Central Command, American forces have blocked sea-based economic activity, which it says accounts for a significant portion of Iran’s economy. Admiral Brad Cooper stated that within 36 hours of the blockade being implemented, US forces had stopped trade entering and leaving Iranian ports.

The move comes despite renewed diplomatic signals from former US President Donald Trump, who said talks with Iranian officials could resume in the coming days. He suggested negotiations may take place in Pakistan, adding that a two-week ceasefire currently in place could lead to a broader agreement.

US Vice President JD Vance, who reportedly led earlier rounds of discussions, said he remained cautiously optimistic about progress, although he acknowledged deep mistrust between the two sides.

The conflict, which has escalated since late February, has already disrupted regional shipping routes and contributed to volatility in global energy markets. Iran’s economy relies heavily on maritime exports, particularly oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.

Diplomatic sources said back-channel negotiations involving Iran, the US, and Gulf intermediaries have shown some progress, though key disagreements remain over Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

The US has reportedly demanded a long-term suspension of Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities, while Tehran has proposed a shorter freeze and insists on the lifting of international sanctions.

Despite tensions, markets have reacted cautiously, with oil prices easing and Asian equities showing gains amid hopes of de-escalation.

The situation remains fluid, with both military pressure and diplomatic engagement unfolding simultaneously as global stakeholders watch for developments in the coming days.
